[Ep-33] Barrel Plant Light: ROKI-Octagon-50W
Updated: Aug 30
Recently we received the latest product from Japanese plant light brand Barrel Plant Light — the Octagon lamp ROKI-Octagon-50W, and we couldn't wait to unbox it!

Table of contents
1. Product introduction
The ROKI-Octagon-50W is available in matte white and matte black, with adjustable color temperature from 3000-5000K, and supports 100-240V voltage for regions like Japan, Taiwan, and Hong Kong.
After connecting to WIFI, users can control the power, adjust brightness and color temperature via their phone,
and can also set schedules — a feature quite rare among plant lights.

2. Setup and installation
Upon unboxing, the first thing we noticed was the user manual — we strongly recommend reading it carefully before use to avoid missing key features. The octagonal panel design combines the advantages of bulbs and panels, is easy to install, and provides even illumination. The product is certified under Japan's Electrical Appliance and Material Safety (PSE), giving users added peace of mind.

3. Function testing
The phone can control brightness and color temperature; four light scenes simulate natural forest light.
Brightness settings: Adjustable brightness range from 1% to 100%, suitable for different plant needs.
Color temperature adjustment: Color temperature range 3000-5000K, can be set to shift on a schedule to simulate morning, midday and evening sunlight in a natural environment.
Smart control: Phone control and scheduling features make setup convenient for users.
Safety: The product has PSE certification to ensure safe use.

Go to "More" settings page — here you can find the lamp schedule,

You can choose presets or custom settings, and they run automatically!
For example, the lights-off time at night, lights-on time in the morning, and the starting color temperature and brightness;
At midday it switches to the brightest setting, and during dusk the color temperature and brightness are adjusted until lights-off.
Let's look at the test results!

Morning setting (note that the terrace sunlight and the panel's color temperature are very close)

Midday setting (the terrace sunlight and the panel's color temperature are likewise very close)

Dusk setting (the terrace sunlight and the panel's color temperature are also very close)

4. Lighting effects and impact on plant growth
The lamp's scheduling feature can automatically adjust color temperature and brightness, making the ROKI-Octagon-50W one of the plant lights that best mimics natural sunlight. Its provided red/blue light ratio can meet plants' needs at different stages, eliminating the need to buy multiple types of bulbs and simplifying choices for users.
5. Conclusion and expectations
After 16 hours of use, the unit did not become hot, so users can touch it safely.
In addition to this new model, we will test other Barrel products and share our experiences.
Many thanks to Barrel for sponsoring this; we look forward to sharing more plant care knowledge to help every plant lover!

Using data is often the most universally applicable and easiest way to explain things. That's why we keep studying these details.
The PPFD values different plants need shouldn't be hard to find online — of course you need the correct plant name or family first. If anyone wants to know which mobile light-measuring app we use, leave us a comment saying "I want it!"
Also pay attention that the distance from the window has a significant effect on lighting:
Light right up against the window is reduced by about 70% compared to a point 10cm from the window!

Everyone's growing environment is different — learn to observe.
For plants, when newly brought home they usually need time to adapt to the new environment. The more the environment matches their natural habits, the faster they adapt. Sometimes plants will instinctively speed up metabolism to adjust, causing some leaf drop — this is normal. Observe the plant's changes closely.
Taking photos to record progress is also a good method; you can compare differences after a period of growth.

Before choosing ROKI, first determine what problem your 'light' needs to solve
ROKI's value isn't just making light stronger, but placing it where it's needed and following your space and planting rhythm. If you're still unsure whether the issue is coverage area, the distance between the light and the leaf surface, existing daylight, or whether you actually need to improve ventilation first, take a few minutes to do a Plant Environment Diagnostic.
If you've confirmed you need a plant light with adjustable brightness, color temperature and scheduling, you can directly view the current settings for the ROKI-Octagon 50W.
