How did you first discover Barrel plant lights, and what made you decide to buy one?

K: I do not clearly remember how I first found it. It was probably through plant posts in my Instagram feed and your detailed lamp-testing videos on YouTube. I mainly grow staghorn ferns, so I needed lights that could run for long hours at home. I cared about the lamp’s appearance as well as a warm colour temperature that would feel harmonious in the space, and I wanted a product with reliable quality. Seeing that Barrel is a Japanese brand with a Hong Kong distributor gave me the confidence to try it.

Before using Barrel plant lights, what difficulties did your plants or growing environment have? What led you to buy?

K: The sunlight at home is poor because the apartment faces northwest, so I knew I would need lights to grow plants. When I first became interested in staghorn ferns, I already planned to buy lighting. I began by trying HK$200–300 clip lamps from Taobao, but their styles and coverage were limited. As the number and variety of plants grew, I had to gather them under the lights and keep moving them around. After a while, it became inconvenient, so I decided to install fixed, wall-mounted lights and create a few permanent plant zones. Recently, one plant had no space under the lights and had to stay by the window in scattered daylight. Its growth slowed dramatically—from fast to very slow.

-When you first started using or adjusting the lights, what change surprised or impressed you most?

K: The most surprising feature was being able to adjust the Octagon lamp’s sunrise and sunset schedule as well as its colour temperature. I do not know whether the plants are “happy,” but it is certainly comfortable for me to look at. Because I have used it consistently, my plants have not had noticeable growth problems so far. Space in Hong Kong and Macau homes is limited, and full brightness can feel glaring indoors. I use a brighter setting when no one is home, then dim it when I return or when guests visit.

Since you began using it, what have you been most satisfied with, and what has been less convenient?

K: As I mentioned above, I am satisfied with how the functions, design, operation, and fit with the space all come together.
There are two small inconveniences:
1. When using a schedule, the mode settings have some limitations—for example, there is no breathing-light mode.
2. The Octagon lamp is relatively heavy, and the neck of the accessory does not provide quite enough support, so adjusting the angle takes more time. I currently reinforce it with white Blu Tack to keep it at the angle I want.
What role does this light play in your life or space, and what has it changed for you?

K: After adding the lights, it feels as if I have a plant exhibition at home every day. I look at the plants daily: whether a staghorn fern is growing a shield frond or a fertile frond, whether anything is growing out of shape, and what needs adjustment. Once the main light is sufficient, watering and airflow become much easier to manage. In short, do not let growing plants become a burden; the plants will reward you.

Treat them like pets. If you choose to grow them, give them the conditions they need to thrive.
