[Ep-22] Mosaic Calathea — Calathea Musaica — Kokedama Planting Points
Mosaic Calathea - Calathea Musaica - Kokedama Planting Points

Mosaic Calathea (Calathea Musaica) has leaf venation that forms a grid-like pattern, giving a somewhat mesmerizing (dazzling) mosaic visual effect.
Suitable for friends with more planting experience who can control the urge to water.
Difficulty level: ★★★☆☆
Not toxic to pets, but it's still better to feed them canned food.
According to the official website of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (https://www.aspca.org/pet-care/animal-poison-control/toxic-and-non-toxic-plants/c?field_non_toxicity_value%5B0%5D=02&page=4), although Mosaic Calathea is non-toxic to pets, you should still avoid excessive contact or accidental ingestion by pets.

Everyone’s growing environment is different; learn to observe.
For a plant, when you first bring it home it usually needs some time to adapt to the new environment. The more the environment matches its living habits, the faster it adapts. Sometimes because of environmental changes a plant will instinctively speed up metabolism to adjust, and there may be some leaf drop — this is normal. Observe the plant’s changes; taking photos to record them is a good method to compare differences after some time of growing.

Liking high air humidity does not mean flooding with water!
Mosaic Calathea tolerates misting on the leaf surface; spraying leaves not only removes dust but also increases humidity, which benefits growth. But control the amount — do not over-spray to avoid damaging the plant.
They prefer air humidity above 80%, but they hate waterlogging. They require soil with good aeration and drainage, and they like looser soil.
Key points:
Light:
Can be placed indoors with partial light; do not expose to more than 2–3 consecutive hours of direct sun, and absolutely avoid scorching sun.
Avoid spraying wet leaves in direct sunlight, as this can burn the leaf surface.
But being in an overly dark environment will cause leaf yellowing. To judge sunlight intensity, you can refer to our other article about sunlight: https://www.greencapsulehk.com/post/ep-04-sunlight-full-partial-shade)
Temperature:
Preferred growth temperature is 15–25℃. Growth stops when temperature is below 10℃. In winter, be sure not to place it in a drafty spot — move it indoors and allow appropriate sunlight, but avoid too much sun exposure that will scorch the leaves.
Water:
During the active growth period the plant requires moist soil and relatively high air humidity and needs sufficient water. Potting soil should be kept moist; air humidity above 80% is beneficial for leaf growth and development.
Under dry soil and air conditions, plant growth slows, leaves yellow, and the patterns blur.
They have very low drought tolerance.
During hot summer periods leaf transpiration is high and water demand increases; lack of water easily causes leaf wilting. You may mist the leaves, but you must avoid waterlogging the pot, otherwise root rot may occur.
For potted cultivation, watch soil dryness to decide when to water. For kokedama (moss ball) cultivation, judge by the moss ball’s feel and weight: generally, when soil is dry you need to water thoroughly; when the moss ball becomes hard and light it needs soaking.
(This post mentions watering methods/timing: https://www.greencapsulehk.com/post/ep-03-kokedama-care-essentials)

* Actual conditions may need to be adjusted according to indoor environment and weather.
* If conditions allow, we recommend using filtered water or tap water that has been left standing overnight (to dissipate chlorine/fluoride).
* Optional use of foliage plant nutrient solution: once a month, one small bottle each time diluted with water (1:1).
