[Ep-23] The Power of Plants — The Sacred Herb, White Sage, and Its Uses

Smudging purification

If you clicked into this article, you’ve probably heard that burning white sage for smudging has a purifying effect.

In Western rites and Eastern traditions, smoke purification is commonly used: burning herbs or various kinds of incense (China’s traditional “offering incense”) can cleanse, purify negative energy, and protect the aura of a space.

Sage is commonly used for its protective and purifying properties; it appeared early in Native American ceremonies, Western magic, angelic invocations, and other ritual celebrations.

The general method is smudging: used to drive away evil spirits, negative thoughts and emotions, and to keep a place clean.

But the phrase “drive away evil spirits, negative thoughts and emotions” sounds mystical and esoteric and can be hard for ordinary people to understand.

Shops selling sage don’t often provide more scientific explanations either. Is there a more understandable “scientific rationale” behind this?

The underlying principle

You may have heard: after someone uses sage to cleanse, they can effectively remove some low-energy moods. People who overuse their brains often feel mentally blocked; smudging with sage over the head can produce a sudden sense of clarity. If used on jewelry and accessories, letting them sit for 24 hours before wearing can yield a different feeling. Applied to a space, about an hour after cleansing you may feel the room is much brighter and clearer...

Some foreign literature even indicates that using sage to smudge indoors for about an hour greatly reduces concentrations of viruses, bacteria, and mold in the room, and that the effect can last about a month!

Positive and negative ions

First, a concept to share: positive and negative ions.

Every cell in our bodies needs positive and negative ions for electrical balance.

Negative ions, called (−), and positive ions, called (+), represent two types of energy.

These two energies continuously complement and cycle within the body, maintaining energetic balance.

Research shows,

when the body has too many positive ions, immune system capacity can decrease, blood circulation is affected, and aging processes accelerate, causing cellular aging.

Negative ions are the opposite of positive ions; they help counteract the harmful effects of excess positive ions.

In natural environments, places like waterfalls, forests, and beaches have high concentrations of negative ions.

The human body tends to relax more easily in these negative-ion-rich environments.

Conversely, everyday things like Wi‑Fi, electronic devices, and electromagnetic waves produce large amounts of positive ions.

Exposure to environments with many positive ions causes an excess of positive ions in our bodies, disrupting the energy cycle and throwing us out of balance,

Both body and mood tend toward fatigue.

This indirectly affects mood, thinking, initiative, and can lead to negative language and behaviors....

Manifesting symptoms include body aches, low mood, irritability, and other negative emotions — which then attract further negative energy.

You may feel work, relationships, and career are all blocked; illness may even follow.

However,

However, contact with any natural products from the environment, or moderate burning of herbs like sage or mugwort, will release negative ions (positive energy). Through contact (also called "grounding"), positive and negative ions can combine and neutralize to achieve ionic "balance" in the body.

Negative emotions and energies (including viruses and germs) will also be successively neutralized; with a firm intention, they can even be driven away.

Side note: Attend our Kokedama workshop or buy a Kokedama materials kit — the making process allows you to touch soil, moss, and other natural elements with your hands, which also fits the "grounding" theory~

So, once you understand these theories, those "evil spirits" (which we can understand as ancient definitions of illness), "negative thoughts and emotions," and "cleansing a space" are no longer mysterious or superstitious, right?

If you can’t go to a temple to pray for health, in daily life pay more attention to how your body feels in different environments and spend more time in nature — that can help keep you "safe for life," haha!

Special bonus
Negative ions that are friendly to the body

Research shows negative ions can:

  • Lower blood pressure, increase cardiac function, and have a notable analgesic effect. Can effectively improve sleep and promote metabolism. Have high activity with strong reducing power, which can disrupt bacterial cytoplasm or protoplasm activity, thereby achieving antibacterial and sterilizing effects. Refresh the mind, enhance imagination, increase alertness, and improve work efficiency. Boost immunity, increase the body’s detoxification ability, normalize hormonal balance, and clear adverse reactions caused by excess histamine — in other words, negative ions can help the body "escape allergic reactions".

In fact, the positive effects negative ions bring to people and nature go far beyond this. They have beneficial therapeutic and health effects for blood-related diseases, malignant tumors, neural behavior, and more.
